Entangle - “to involve (someone) in difficulties or complicated circumstances from which it is difficult to escape.”
Within African American and other African diasporic communities, tightly-coiled hair is labeled as “bad hair,” and Black women often straighten their hair, apply harsh chemicals, and/or add hair extensions in order to achieve a hair texture that is congruent with white, Eurocentric beauty standards. The complex relationship that Black women have with their hair is often closely intertwined with emotions towards their identities as Black people. This project attempts to convey this complex relationship and the struggle to appreciate one's own hair texture, challenging the dominant beauty standard.
